The wrong tweezers show straight away: lashes that slip, fans that lose their shape, a tired wrist. A good pair of tweezers, on the other hand, makes isolation cleaner, the application more even and the appointment more comfortable, for you and for your client.
Here is how to choose your eyelash extension tweezers according to your technique, the shape of the tip and the way you work.
Isolation tweezers or volume tweezers: what is the difference?
A Lash Artist works with two pairs of tweezers, one in each hand, and they do not play the same role:
- the isolation tweezers separate a natural lash from its neighbors and keep it clear throughout the application. They must be fine, precise and close perfectly;
- the application tweezers pick up the extension, or the fan in Volume, and place it on the isolated lash. For classic lashes, this is often a second pair of isolation tweezers; for Volume, it is a pair of volume tweezers with an angled tip.
Straight, curved or angled tip: what difference does the shape make?
- A fine, straight tip isolates one lash at a time with great precision, even in dense areas.
- A curved tip slides easily between the lashes and keeps the isolated lash well clear. It offers a different angle of approach, which is useful when lashes grow in different directions.
- An angled tip provides a good contact surface: it is used to pick up, open and place Russian Volume fans consistently.
- A fine end on an angled tip gives more precision for tight fans, light volumes and detail work.
The four GEMELLA tweezers at a glance
| Tweezers | Tip | Finish | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curved isolation | Curved | Silver | Isolation for Classic, Russian Volume and Hybrid Volume |
| Precision isolation | Straight and fine | Iridescent | Isolation for Classic and Volume |
| Volume | Angled | Silver | Fans for Russian Volume and Hybrid Volume |
| Precision volume | Angled, fine end | Iridescent | Tight fans, light volumes, detail work |
All of them are filed and hand-finished by a Lash Artist, with tips that close cleanly and an engraved GEMELLA logo.
Which pair of tweezers for which technique?
- Classic: two pairs of isolation tweezers. For example, Precision isolation to separate the lashes and Curved isolation to place the extension.
- Russian Volume: isolation tweezers and volume tweezers for the fans. For fine or tight fans, Precision volume offers more finesse.
- Hybrid Volume: the same logic as Russian Volume, with isolation tweezers on one side and volume tweezers on the other.
What to check before buying
- Tip closure: the tips must meet flat, with no gap, along their whole length. This is what lets you hold a very fine extension without letting it slip.
- Tension: neither too stiff, which tires the hand during a long appointment, nor too soft, which lets the extension escape.
- Grip: the weight, length and shape of the body must stay comfortable through several hours of lashing.
- Finish: well-filed tips with no burrs, which do not catch on the natural lashes.
- Care: a surface that is easy to clean and disinfect between clients.
How to care for your eyelash extension tweezers
- clean and disinfect them after every client with a suitable product, then dry them;
- remove adhesive residue as soon as possible: a clogged tip throws off your grip;
- avoid knocks and drops, which can misalign the tips;
- store them in a case or on a stand that protects the tips;
- use them for lashing only: using them for anything else damages them.
Which tweezers to start with?
For classic lashes, two pairs of isolation tweezers are enough to get started. When you move on to Volume, you add volume tweezers for the fans. The Precision isolation tweezers are a good starting point: they work just as well for classic lashes as for Volume.
Tweezers are not everything: curl, thickness and mapping matter just as much to the result. Our guide to choosing a B, C, CC or M curl complements this one.
In summary
Isolation tweezers for the natural lash, and application tweezers suited to your technique: straight and fine for precision, curved for a different angle of approach, angled for fans.
